From September 15 to October 15, the U.S. observes Hispanic Heritage Month — a vibrant celebration of the histories, cultures, and contributions of Americans whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. In 2025, this observance carries a particularly resonant theme: “History, Heritage, Hope.” It’s a call to honor the past, embrace cultural identity, and envision a future shaped by resilience and unity.

“History” honors the sacrifices and achievements of Hispanic pioneers — from civil rights leaders to artists and educators. “Heritage” celebrates the languages, traditions, and values passed down through generations. And “Hope” speaks to the aspirations of today’s youth and the promise of a better future.

United Way Broward is very proud to be part of this annual celebration, and we have long been a champion of both individual and collective well-being. The Hispanic population in Broward County has surpassed 600,000 people, which is over 31% of our community’s population, and many people in this population must navigate challenges related to mental health, cultural stigmas, and generational patterns.

Through our Latino Initiative Action Team, United Way Broward is bringing Hispanic Heritage Month to life through two events: Conversemos Entre Mujeres and the Latino Symposium/Rompiendo Estigmas. These powerful initiatives embody the spirit of this year’s theme by fostering dialogue, empowerment, renewal, and restoration.

Conversemos Entre Mujeres (Let’s Talk Among Women)

Held on August 22, 2025 at the Bonaventure Town Center Club in Weston, this free, Spanish-language event created a safe space for Latina women to discuss mental health, emotional well-being, and family dynamics. With guest speaker Erika Monroy, a seasoned psychologist and emotional intelligence coach, over 100 attendees explored how their environments influence their mental health and identified ways to build emotionally resilient families.

In addition to Monroy, the inspiring speakers who shared their unique insights and knowledge at this event included Johanna Vega, Nathalie Collado, Yaneth Beltrán, and Luzcarime Figari. This event created conversation, connection, and community; honored the cultural value of familial bonds; and encouraged women to break cycles of silence around mental health.

Latino Symposium

The annual Latino Symposium/ Rompiendo Estigmas(Rising Above Stigma, presented in Spanish, addresses the stigmas surrounding mental health and substance use in our community. Topics include how to talk honestly with children about emotional struggles, how to manage anxiety and depression, and how to support loved ones through mental health crises. The event features influential speakers who bring personal stories and expert insights to the event.

Our annual Latino Symposium embodies the “Hope” component of Hispanic Heritage Month by challenging outdated beliefs and promoting well-being in individuals, families, and communities. It also reflects “History” by acknowledging the cultural and systemic barriers preventing families from accessing mental health resources. Through education and empowerment, this event dismantles stigmas and builds bridges toward wellness. You can register for this year’s Latino Symposium by clicking here.

In a year marked by social change and growing awareness of mental health, United Way Broward’s events are more powerful than ever, uplifting people and bringing transformation. Many in our community continue to face disparities in healthcare access, education, and economic opportunity. In particular, mental health remains a taboo subject in many households, often due to cultural norms and lack of resources.

By prioritizing mental health among our mission and four pillars, United Way Broward is addressing critical needs, providing support systems, and empowering better care across our great community. For us, Hispanic Heritage Month 2025 is to confront challenges, elevate voices, and build hope. Without question, United Way Broward’s Latino Initiative and our dozens of events and workshops throughout the year have been instrumental in helping people rise and thrive.

All of us at United Way Broward celebrate the countless contributions made by Hispanic-Americans across the U.S. and in our own community, and we look forward to a dynamic, healthy future for every person who lives in Broward. Join us as we embrace Hispanic Heritage Month and celebrate the spirit of comunidad.
